About Add Page Numbers: key facts and tips

Key facts

Documently Add Page Numbers stamps a number on every page of a PDF. It offers six positions: bottom centre, bottom right, bottom left, top centre, top right and top left. The number can read 1, Page 1 or Page 1 of N, in small, medium or large text. Numbering can start from any value, which helps when the PDF continues an earlier part of a file, and the first page can be skipped so a cover page stays clean. Pages that are stored sideways in the PDF still get their number in the corner you chose, the right way up. The tool writes the numbers on top of the existing pages and does not re-compress anything, so scans and text keep their original quality. The PDF is processed inside the browser and never uploaded, so project reports, theses and application bundles stay private. Password-protected PDFs must be unlocked first.

Long application bundles, project reports and theses are easier to check when every page carries a number. Pick where the number goes and how it reads, and the tool stamps it on each page without touching the rest of the content.

Good to know

  • In Page 1 of N, N is the last page number printed, so a skipped cover isn't counted.
  • Merge your documents first with Merge PDF, then number the combined file once.
  • Numbers are added as text in the standard Helvetica font, in black.
  • Locked PDF? Remove the password with Unlock PDF, then add numbers.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add page numbers to a PDF on my phone?

Open this page in Chrome or Safari, pick the PDF from your files, choose the position and format, and tap Add page numbers. It is free, needs no app or signup, and the file stays on your phone.

Can I start numbering from a number other than 1?

Yes. Type any starting number in the Start numbering at box. This is handy when the PDF is the second part of a longer document and should continue from, say, page 21.

How do I leave the cover page without a number?

Tick Skip the first page. Page 1 stays clean and numbering begins on page 2, starting from the number you set.

Will adding page numbers reduce the quality of my PDF?

No. The numbers are written on top of each page and nothing else is re-compressed, so text, scans and photos look exactly as before.
